back to basics

hi 
ive only just discovered KODI  from friends but im a little confused ....
1 friend has a box next to his TV,  he paid for the box on line a while ago, 
another friend discontinued with Netflix telling me he has now got KODI on his smart TV he down loaded KODI then down loaded the app GENESIS and how chuffed he is....
now what confuses me is this ....
i have a 2015 Toshiba smart TV and i have no idea how to copy friend number 2...
i tried to do it on my pc but wat i have is different to what i see on line tittle THE 10 MOST POPULAR APPS FOR KODI 2015, IVE INSTALLED A FEW THINGS BUT I CANT FIND genisis.

PLEASE CAN ANYONE BRING ME UP TO DATE ON ALL THIS NEW TECH CUS I AINT GOT A CLUE, DO I NEED TO PAY FOR ANYTHING IF SO WHAT AND WHERE DO I GET IT , IF NOT PLEASE CAN SOME ONE SHOW ME THE IDIOTS GIUDE TO kodi....lol
